ligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency (see our Moral Commitment section). College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply. We screen Fellowship applicants for qualities the Foundation believes are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment and/or reasonably reliable leading indicators of future professional success.

Scholarship Description: The annual competition for Graduate Fellowships begins with the application period which opens each year in August at which time a deadline consistent with those of NSF and other fellowship granting organizations will be posted. Only those applications which are complete, with all supporting materials and documents provided (including Reference Reports) by the posted deadline will be assured of full consideration by the Foundation. Untimely or incompletely-submitted applications will be entertained only at the Foundation’s discretion and convenience. Each year’s competition concludes at the end of the following March, at which time the Foundation’s Board of Directors determines the most highly qualified Fellowship applicants and the number of new Fellowships which available resources will be able to support. All Fellowship applicants are notified by mail of the Foundation’s action on their application on or before April 1 of each year.

The ideal candidate will possess a background in cognitive psychology or cognitive neuroscience, and also have knowledge about the field of education (e.g. test construction). Funding will be provided for a period of two years. A doctoral degree, not more than three years old, is required.

Scholarship Description: A postdoctoral position is available under the supervision of Dr. Lars Nyberg in the Department of Integrative Medical Biology (Physiology Section) and Radiation Sciences (Diagnostic Radiology) at the University of Umea, Sweden. The candidate will conduct work in the broad field of “educational neuroscience” with the purpose of investigating fundamental learning processes from a neuroscientific perspective and consider implications of the findings for current educational settings. One example of an ongoing project is studies of neural correlates of the “testing effect” (Eriksson et al., 2011, Neurosci. Lett.). The work is mainly done with functional MRI within Umea Center for Functional Brain Imaging (UFBI).

The project, ‘Customer Led Network Revolution’, is the largest of the projects awarded funding by the ‘Low Carbon Network Fund’. Durham’s role in this project involves: detailed trial design (sampling strategy etc); detailed analysis of profile and related trial data; customer feedback capture and analysis; modelling and simulation of energy systems; reporting and dissemination of key outcomes. An experienced research engineer is required to work on the project in a technical capacity.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) is funded by the Australian Government and awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University. 

Number

Each year the University of Melbourne offers about 38 new IPRSs.

Benefits and conditions

IPRSs cover full tuition fees for each year of the course and the annual Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
Students awarded an IPRS by the University of Melbourne normally receive a APAInt as well which provides a living allowance, thesis allowance and other benefits.
The IPRS conditions include information about duration of awards, commencement requirements etc.

Eligibility criteria

To be considered for an IPRS, applicants need to apply for scholarship and candidature in a graduate research degree course (eg. masters by research, PhD or other research doctorate) at the University of Melbourne by the application closing date. Further information concerning the eligibility criteria can be found on in the Conditions Booklet.

Selection criteria

Selection will be based on the eligibility criteria and academic merit. Scholarship assessment guidelines, tips for applicants and other funding opportunities may be found on the Scholarships Resources webpage.
